Report on Motor sport law lectures at Cranfield University (UK)


The first modules of the Msc in Motorsport Engineering and Management at the Cranfield University have been welcomed with enthusiasm by the delegates. The delegates were coming from various European countries, including Finland, France, Greece, Italy,Spain and the UK. The evaluation results are not yet available, but Motorsportslaw.org is convinced that Cranfield is scoring a bull's eye.

The following lectures were presented:

1. Paul Jeffrey,director of Ecotec Ltd., provided an overview of the history of motorsport, starting with the first actual race (in 1894 between Paris and Rouen) up to and including Formula 1, USAC, CART and IRL racing in 2001 and beyond. The aim of this presentation was to create awareness of the history of the main international motorsport disciplines and transfer knowledge relating to various influences affecting the development of the motorsport industry.

2. John Nixon,director of the Motorsport Group of Cranfield University, provided a knowledge tool to analyse technical competition regulations. The objective of these sessions was to gain experience in the subject matter and to understand:
* how those technical regulations should be read and applied to a touring car;
* ECU control software;
* how the choice of alternative specifications permitted in the regulations can optimise the touring car performance.

3. Andy Woolgar, general manager of Mimsport, exchanged his views and experience how to manage a Race Team most effectively.

4. Breus van der Horst, owner of the lawfirm www.motorsportlaw.org, introduced the delegates in a variety of legal aspects involved with motorsport. His lecture entailed:
* legal awareness in motorsport; * protection of know-how; * workshop on sponsoring, development and employment contracts, including handing-out of standard contracts; * understanding FIA regulations; * case studies, by making use of video material.

5.Visit with the British Racing Drivers' Club to Silverstone with the objective to provide insight into the facilities available at this leading international motorsport venue, including race control tower.

6. Paul Gladstone, The Motor sports Association, presented the role of sanctioning bodies.

The assessment results awarded by the delegates on usefulness and quality of the notes and presentations given during this Msc will be disseminated in due course.
